Tomohito Funaki san uses a less common form of traditional lacquer technique known as Makiji Urushi 蒔地 by building the layers of lacquer over coarse stone clay sediments directly applied to the wood, creating beautiful shadows under the light from the uneven texture and matte black lacquer.

One appreciate the varying depths of the black pigment layering, warm elements of the earth-like surface in each piece of his works. Simple refined and ultra light-weight modern forms with organic texture. Its textural lacquer also provides a protection against scratches, making it very durable for everyday use.
