Hiroko Hatano
Approx. 17.5 cm x 8 cm x H 2.3 cm
After graduating from the Department of Philosophy, Hatano encountered ceramics and metalwork before discovering pâte de verre—an ancient glassmaking technique whose name comes from the French term meaning “glass paste.” This encounter marked the beginning of her path as a glass artist.
Working primarily in shades of blue and grey, her creations possess a distinctive palette and texture with a quiet, resonant depth. Though functional as everyday objects, her works embrace both the legacy of traditional craftsmanship and the inherent fragility of glass, evoking the calm, stone-like presence of natural minerals.
By deliberately keeping the forms of her vessels simple, Hatano allows the “landscapes” formed by the flow of glass granules to emerge with greater clarity. Her works gently reveal moments of stillness, offering a glimpse of a serene and contemplative world within the rhythms of everyday life.
