To coincide with the 2026 Loewe Foundation Craft Prize at the National Gallery Singapore, KOUad Kyoto is rewriting the Urushi Narrative. We are bringing you a preview of Japanese materiality—where progressive artistry, a century of heritage, and technical innovation collide.

The Vanguard. Wei Nan (隗楠)
A 2026 Loewe Finalist, Wei Nan is the next-gen trailblazer of Japanese sculpture. She is disrupting the 9,000-year-old tradition of lacquer, moving it beyond "functional objects" i wnto a monochromatic, sculptural language of fluid form and shadow. She captures the "vitality of nature" in investment-grade fine art.

The Alchemist. COCOO
The innovation arm of the legendary 100-year-old Kyoto urushi refiners Sato Kiyomatsu Shoten (Est. 1921). COCOO represents Innovation and Technical Mastery, supplying the raw materials for a new era of high-performance lacquer applications in contemporary luxury. This is the future of materiality, curated for a more conscientious modern lifestyle.
